How to reach Leuven from Brussels

Most flights and trains will arrive in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Leuven is situated c. 20 km from Brussels airport. The simplest but most expensive way to travel from Brussels airport to Leuven would be to take a taxi from the airport. This will cost around € 70. Licensed taxis can be identified by the yellow and blue licence emblem. An alternative and less expensive method would be to take the Leuven-bound train at the airport itself. This will cost around € 7. The train station is located in the basement (level -1) of the airport terminal building itself. You will have to stop over at Brussels-North Station and take a connecting train to Leuven (Louvain, in French). These trains usually have Luik (Liège, in French) as its final destination but they stop in Leuven en route. The Brussels-Leuven trip takes about 30 minutes by express train (indicated as IC trains).
Do not take the train going to Louvain-la-Neuve since this will bring you not to Leuven but to the French-language university, Université Catholique de Louvain in Ottignies.
Schedule information for all national and interational trains is available on the Belgian Railways (SNCB/NMBS) website; enter Zaventem Airport as the departure station and Leuven as the destination station.
It is advisable to have already some cash in euro (€) when you arrive in case the money exchange offices would be closed.

Getting around

In Leuven the quickest way to get from one place to another is by bike. While this is a good option for students and residents, for temporary visitors, the bus might be more suitable. The bus will take you wherever you want to go, in and around Leuven. All information about timetables, bus lines, tickets can be found online: http://www.delijn.be/index.php (only in Dutch) or at the 'Lijnwinkel' (nearby Leuven station).
