Communication in insects is mainly regulated through chemical signals or pheromones, that originate in a variety of exocrine glands. Our main research deals with functional morphology of these exocrine glands in social insects (ants, bees, wasps and termites). This involves the structural description (light and electron microscopy, 3D-reconstruction), chemical analysis and behavioural function of the gland secretions. We also study functional morphology of reproductive regulation in social insects, with main emphasis on the spermatheca.
