PhD fellowships for Belgian students

Motivated students are welcome to apply for a scholarship to do a PhD in our lab. Projects have to fit in with the research interests of either Prof. Tom Wenseleers (social evolution, honeybee diseases, sociobiology, sociomicrobiology, sociogenomics, swarm intelligence) or Prof. Johan Billen (chemical ecology, functional morphology of social insects). Projects can use a variety of techniques: behavioural observation, genetic analysis of kinship patterns, theoretical modelling, computer simulations, microarray analysis (main expertise of Prof. T. Wenseleers), chemical analysis of pheromones or study of the morphology of pheromone-producing exocrine glands (main expertise Prof. J. Billen). As model systems we principally use honeybees, stingless bees, Vespine wasps, ants and aphids (and most recently also social spiders, Pseudomonas, yeast and robot swarms). Motivated candidates can also suggest their own topic if they like (e.g. on human cooperation). Funding has to be applied for through the IWT or FWO. The IWT mainly supports applied research; ca. 1 in 3 of the applications get funded. The FWO mainly supports basic research and applications get funded provided that the candidate has a very strong CV, and very high grades in every year (top 5% of his/her year). Application deadlines are in September for the IWT and in January for the FWO. Projects run for 4 years. To get an idea of some current and past research topics, have a look here. Occasionally we also have open vacancies on newly granted projects.

For more information, contact Prof. Johan Billen or Prof. Tom Wenseleers.

PhD fellowships for foreign students

Under EU law, PhD scholarships are now open to be applied for by anybody from an EU member state with a degree in Biology (or Agricultural Engineering). Funding has to be applied for through the IWT or FWO. The IWT mainly supports applied research; ca. 1 in 3 of the applications get funded. The FWO mainly supports basic research and applications get funded provided that the candidate has a very strong CV, and very high grades in every year (top 5% of his/her year, "Magna Cum Laude" or "Summa Cum Laude"); the application itself is very short (ca. 3 pages). Application deadlines are in September for the IWT and in January for the FWO. Projects run for 4 years and and have to fit in with the research interests of either Prof. Tom Wenseleers (social evolution, honeybee diseases, sociobiology, sociomicrobiology, sociogenomics, swarm intelligence) or Prof. Johan Billen (chemical ecology, functional morphology of social insects). Projects can use a variety of techniques: behavioural observation, genetic analysis of kinship patterns, theoretical modelling, computer simulations, microarray analysis (main expertise of Prof. T. Wenseleers), chemical analysis of pheromones or study of the morphology of pheromone-producing exocrine glands (main expertise Prof. J. Billen). As model systems we principally use honeybees, stingless bees, Vespine wasps, ants and aphids (and most recently also social spiders, Pseudomonas, yeast and robot swarms). Motivated candidates can also suggest their own topic if they like. For candidates from some Latin American countries there are some special schemes to do sandwich PhDs (ie partly in your home country, and partly in our group). Occasionally we also have open vacancies on newly granted projects.

For more information, contact Prof. Johan Billen or Prof. Tom Wenseleers.

Fellowships for foreign postdoctoral researchers

Motivated candidates are welcome to apply for a postdoc at the EC (Marie-Curie fellowships), FWO (Flanders Research Fund; fellowships for foreign postdocs) or KULeuven Research Fund (fellowships for foreign postdocs). Competition at all these granting agencies is strong and candidates need to have a good CV with publications in high-ranking scientific journals.

For more information, contact Prof. Johan Billen or Prof. Tom Wenseleers.
