Biogenomics is a KULeuven Research & Development-subdivision specialising in project management and consulting, product development and services in animal and plant genomics. The main reason for the creation of this subdivision is that expertise and technology on the genomics / transcriptomics of organisms and their populations has expanded so much that specialised and personal advice (e.g. contract research) is very welcome.

We provide the following products and services:

  • Genetic marker discovery: neutral and gene linked SSRs and SNPs
  • Sequencing: Low and Medium (ABI 3130) throughput sequencing, Next generation sequencing (454 - sequencing, Solexa)
  • Genotyping: from Low to High throughput SSRs, AFLPs and SNPs genotyping
  • Identification and Traceability: species, population and pedigree
  • Selective breeding: broodstock management, QTL analysis and Marker Assisted Selection
  • Health Management and Molecular Parasitology: identification and quantification of pathogens in aquatic organisms and problem solving in fish health management.
  • Development of biomarkers: Characterisation and evaluation of molecular biomarkers as sentinel for organic and inorganic pollutions (e.g. PAH, PCB, heavy metals and pesticides)
  • Bioinformatic Tool Development and Training: Database design, Script development, training in genetic data analysis
  • Project development and follow-up:
    - Development, writing and execution of research projects.
    - Consulting for ongoing projects

We routinely apply our expertise in:

  • basic molecular research
  • fisheries and aquaculture
  • forensics and traceability
  • human and animal health
  • wildlife management

Our staff includes 4 PhDs, 1 senior engineer and 1 lab technician. Our labs and offices are located in downtown Leuven, Belgium.
